Artova is a non.profit NGO – a combination of a cultural and a neighbourhood association representing an area located in the borders of downtown Helsinki. There are apx. 10 000 people living in the represented area, a few thousand jobs, and 5 schools with emphasis on art. Artova has for the past 7 years strongly focused on supporting self-organized initiatives by both giving possibilities for grassroot actors and trying to identify and analyze the main elements of how these initiatives function. Artova hosts yearly several projects from urban agriculture to street and film festivals. Everything is free to attend and most of the projects are fully based on volunteers. In te basis of Artovas ideology is to distribute power and responsibility. Artova has also created ArtovaModelTM, an online self reflection tool aimed at helping to identify strengths and weaknesses of self-organized initiatives.
